Notes by the taper/trader:
This is the only unreleased soundboard recording of the Symphonic tour that I have found. The raw recording favors the orchestra, and the guitar and keyboard parts are hard to hear. The master improves the mix with EQ and dynamics processing.

The original master of this show was done using Sound Forge. The tape I received had tracks Perpetual Change and And You And I in the wrong sequence, and my first master carried this error forward.

My copy of the recording did not include the two Steve Howe solo tracks. The ones I downloaded recently from EZT sound like an audience recording. Forgotten Yesterdays documents a soundboard and an audience recording, but I suspect the Steve Howe tracks are missing from all versions of the soundboard. Nonetheless, I inserted the audience tracks in the 2005 remaster.

The SHN file of disk two, track five (Starship Trooper) was apparently corrupted in the copy of the files torrented on EZT. This torrent resolves all of these problems.

The last night in Germany for the band finds them in good performing shape and our taper here did a great job of capture. However, that is where this buck stops. I'd say the audience here is not the best and Sting seems to notice this. Most of the show here, but the very end of De Do Do Do is missing. Almost all of the banter before King of Pain is gone as well (the discs change at that point with this one). There was a source of this torrented out at Dime, but someone seems to have done some digital noise reduction here and I think that version is inferior to this one (the hiss is really not bad here anyway). If you can go without an enthusiastic audience here, you will find a fantastic performance inside.

Notes:
Going through some old cd's and tape transfers - I received these files in Wave format - There are 2 full versions that also circulate titled Sinners Dance and Full Moon that were also released which I do not have. If anyone would be nice to share this it would be nice!!! The disc is silver in color with "Sinners Swing" in black lettering arching the top of the disc and "KTS 706 AS The Ultimate In Quality" along the bottom. It's an audience recording. "audience Ex-" but could have been a very solid EX if it were run through an EQ. The sound is somewhat distant as a whole and no one instrument "overpowers" another. This is missing solo's for Alex and Mike. "Ice Cream Man", "Unchained", and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love". These last two tracks were supposed to be included in this release as evidenced by this cover art, which was never used.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This is the only available complete "In Utero" soundboard. It was broadcast on Italian radio. There is a DAT recording available that was made from the radio broadcast, but I like the sound of the bootleg CD better. Some DJ banter has been cleverly edited out by the Italian bootleggers. I swapped the stereo image so that Kurt is on the right and Pat is on the left, like on the official live releases.

notes
Here is the best sounding recording from Frank Zappa's 1975/1976 world tour. The recording has an incredible stereo image and sounds similar to Frank's own recording of the show, which is also largely ambient. Here you can find the complete performance of "Black Napkins" as heard on "Zoot Allures". Another amazing thing about this show is that it was recorded with two staggered recorders, so it is is 100% complete! The main recording is used for the bulk of the show, and a backup recording was used to fill in a reel change at the end of "Honey Don't You Want A Man Like Me?". Superb sound, complete performance, it doesn't get any better than this, folks!

Notes by the uploader
I bought this disc back when A & B Sound still existed.  They happened to carry a few select bootlegs on occasion.  I remember thinking, "Wow, this is going to be amazing," and payed something like $19.99 for it.  This recording has been available on many bootleg LP's for many years.  Aside from the Red Lightning releases, most of the LP's only had a few songs.  There was a picture disc version as well, but as cool as they are, picture discs aren't the same sound quality as black vinyl.  This is the most complete recording available, and the quality is pretty good!

The harmonica player is listed as Jim Morrison, but even though the harpist isn't that good, I think Morrison was considerably worse at harmonica, so it may not be him.  Jim Morrison was evidently just at the club and is quite drunk, coming onto the stage during the track called "Morrison's Lament" and staying basically for the rest of the recording.  He starts "singing" into a recording mic, and Hendrix instructs him to use a different mic.  Apparently Janis Joplin was in the crowd this night too, and Morrison spilled a drink on her lap, getting a slap in the face in return.  There is some confusion as to who the drummer really was, and also a bit of debate as to whether Johnny Winter was actually there.  Johnny Winter's manager at the time, Steve Paul, owned the club and in my opinion, no one else sounded quite like Johnny at the time.  However Johnny Winter claims he wasn't on the stage that night and never performed with Jim Morrison, but he was also a major drug addict at the time, maybe he forgot?  It does sound like Buddy Miles so I wouldn't doubt that it's him, possibly for the entire recording and not just half like the liner notes claim.

So this is far from a supergroup.  More of a jam session that got ruined by one drunken Jim Morrison.  But it is very interesting to listen to, and there's some great moments.  Hendrix was supposedly the one operating the recording gear, how this got to the hands of a bootleg company, who knows.

Notes:
This one is absolutely essential for any Band fans - recorded a month after the release of the second album, the band is in fine form. The recording itself is remarkable for a mono audience tape from the late sixties. All the instruments are well balanced and clear, and the audience is present but never overpowers the music. Spectral analysis shows that it is lossless and as far as I know it's never been shared in any form before. I got the show in a private trade over a decade ago - apparently, my source got it from the original taper who was concerned about possible bootlegging and requested that the recording keep a low profile. I've abided by that request for years, but this show is too great to keep it hidden for any longer.

Blackfoot are back aboard with a show on the Milwaukee '94 Summerfest playing a couple of songs from After The Reign, their last studio album and the usual classics. Although Rickey Medlocke was the only original member by this date, the band still managed to get a hard rocking sound, so characteristic of Blackfoot on the early 80s.

This one was re-edited two times (wasn't satisfied with the results), hope I got it finally right.
Huge thanks to mr. analog for taping the show and sharing the master. Thanks!

"This recording is absolutely sick and borderline ridiculous in terms quality for an audience. If you want to hear power captured via digital audie, this is the tape for you.Not sure we could do as well today for some reason and why is that? One trainspotter moment I have called out before from the show is beautifully captured on this tape in the first minute or so of "Born in the U.S.A." As some of you might know, for this tour Max Weinberg switched from miking his drums to using drum triggers to fatten the sound. The drum trigger hits a sampler which plays commanding "whoomp" sound. When Bruce starts BITUSA in Chicago, Max comes in with those single snare beats, only someone forgot to turn on the drum sampler/triggers. So for the first few bars its like "tick," "tick," "tick" as we only here the miked drum, then someone throws the switch and it's "kaboom," "kaboom," "kaboom." The difference is incredible and you'll hear it here."-'Butterking'

"This was also my first Springsteen show (although my Dad's secretary wanted to take me to see him on The River tour-- folks said NO--I was only 10). I was playing high school football and had to run the mile for time. I was running every day and I HATE running. The Sunday before the show, I was laying in bed listening to WCKG (they USED to play music back then) trying to avoid getting out of bed to go running. They announced that they were going to be giving away tickets to the show, so I figured that was an excuse to stay in bed a little longer. I never actually thought that I would win. When the time came, I called and actually won. I called my sister, who was working at a drugstore and asked her if she wanted to go. She didn't believe me. When I finally convinced her that I was serious, she dropped the phone and screamed. This actually got me out of a HUGE jam with my sister, as she had graduated high school that summer and I never got her a gift, and her birthday was between the Sunday I won the tickets and the day of the show. We went to the show with a friend of hers, his boyfriend, and a friend of hers (who I happened to be playing football with). We got there at 10am (general admission seating) and ran into some friends that had been there since 7am. We hopped in line with them and waited. When they finally let people in, we ran (which sucked for me as I had a micro-cassette recorder in my shoe). I taped the show from about 10 rows of bodies back, but all you can hear is Herman (the guy I played football with) screaming "BORN IN THE USA" for 3 hours with Springsteen in the background. So this is a huge upgrade for me. It was hotter than hell that day and there was 1" thick black rubber matting covering the playing field. We kept going and soaking under the showers that the players use on the sidelines. Someone near us had a bag of chocolate chips that get spilled and melted on the matting. By the time we got home, we looked like we had spent 3 months in the same clothes in Beirut. By the way, the show was SMOKING!!" - 'toadhead'

Journey - Charge Of The Light Brigade (STU/FLAC)

(Studio FLAC)

Zipperdeke ZIP-015

lineage
Silver cd > EAC > FLAC > WAV > CDR > EAC (secure) > WAV > TLH > FLAC (L8)

The unfinished album by the original pre-Steve Perry Journey. 13 tracks from the fusion tinged rockers plus 3 live tracks from pre-Journey fusion band Sears Schon Errico.
If you love great guitar work you want this CD.
If you do not like Journey you will like this.
There are two songs with vocals.

01 - Mystery Mountain [studio mix - unfinished]
02 - In The Morning Day [studio mix - no vocals]
03 - Charge Of The Light Brigade a.k.a. Alive Again [fusion w/ killer Neal Solos]
04 - Still Lovers
05 - To Make Some Music [studio mix - no vocals]
06 - In My Lonely Feeling/Conversations [studio mix - no vocals]
07 - Angels From Heaven
08 - Can You Hear Me
09 - Kohoutek [studio mix - differs from released version]
10 - Out Of Control [Schon lights it up]
11 - To Make Some Music [no vocals - alt. version]
12 - See The Light
13 - Charge Of The Light Brigade a.k.a. Alive Again [alt. version - faster tempo]

14 - Your Little Girl
15 - Voodoo Chile
16 - Tonight

Lineup on tracks 01 to 13:
- Neal Schon - Guitar
- Ross Valory - Bass
- Gregg Rolie - Vocals, Keyboards
- George Tickner - Guitar
- Prairie Prince - Drums

Lineup on track 14 to 16:
- Pete Sears - Bass
- Neil Schon - Guitar
- Greg Errico - Drums
- Gregg Rolie - Keyboards

The first thirteen tracks are all studio recordings and other than some hiss and slight distortion in louder places, are probably an 8.5-9 on a sound quality scale of 1 to 10. The last three tracks are live recordings from the Sunshine Festival at the Diamond Head Crater, Honolulu, HI 1/1/73. In the liner notes to the 3rd Santana album from 1971, Rolie says when he and Neal quit the band (after the 4th album), he opened up a restaurant for a year before hooking up with Schon to form Journey. The 1st Journey album's songs are copyrighted 1974 and the album was released in '75, so it's logical Neal was doing something musically during the year or so between the two bands. All three of these tracks are instrumentals and it sounds like a decent audience recording. This outfit is sometimes refered to as Birthday or Happy Birthday. Herbie Herbert interviews tell that when him and Carlos Santana split during Christmas in '72 he grabbed Neal and Gregg and took them to a gig 5 days later in Hawaii on New Years Day in '73 (the three tracks here) and in March of '73 drew up the paperwork on a band yet un-named that would become Journey.

Tapers Notes:
After a 55 City road trip, Bonni Raitt returns home, and performs at the sold out The Greek Theater, one of Los Angeles' preminent venues.  She was having a blast, calling out her agents, producers, friends and family in the first 15 rows, some of which came up and played with her. She was so moved, you can hear her voice break up and
tear hit her eye in "I Can't Make You Love Me" All banter and stage talk was removed and tracks zero'ed out and faded in. Some FM drift downgrades this to an "A."

Over the last two years Marc-Olivier and I have put in countless hours to bring this release to life. The original Dawn of the Piper was released many many years ago in audio format. An official rev A edition in shorten format was seriously needed.  However, with the release of BBC Archives 1967-1969 many of the tracks on Dawn of the Piper became redundant. I made the decision to remove all the redundant tracks and replace them with new, yet appropriate, material. Tracks for this release needed to meet three simple requirements:

1) The track must be a Pink Floyd track with Syd Barrett. No post-Syd Pink Floyd material and no post-Floyd Syd Barrett material. This is after-all "Dawn" of the Piper.

2) The track must be a pleasant listen. No real rough and crappy sounding recordings (like the Let's Roll Another One rehearsal recording). No commentator in the foreground with music in the background recordings (like the Matilda's Mother track taken from the Granada TV film on the Underground).

3) No material that has ever been officially released on CD. This last requirement meant deleting the mono Arnold Layne track from the original Dawn of the Piper track list.

By an amazing case of serendipity, the 20 tracks that met these criteria all fit nicely on a single CDR.
. Here's the track list for Dawn of the Piper Rev A HRV-CDR-018:

01 Lucy Leave

02 King Bee

The original 5-member Pink Floyd line-up. With Bob Klose on lead guitar and Syd Barrett on rhythm guitar. Possibly recorded at Regent Sound studio around May 1965 (according to Bob Klose ? whose memory seems a bit better than Nick Mason's on the
subject).

03 Interstellar Overdrive
Taken from the film "San Francisco". Recorded at Thompson Private Recording Studios on 31 October 1966 (or there about).

04 Arnold Layne

05 Candy and a Currant Bun

Taken from the original acetates demoed to EMI. Recorded at Sound Techniques studio from 23-25 January 1967. After hearing these acetates, EMI signed Pink Floyd to a recording contract on 1 February 1967. When they created this Arnold Layne acetate, they cut out the organ solo. I don't know why they did that. Knowing that EMI would object to the drug references in the lyrics to Let's Roll Another One, Syd rewrote them to create this Candy and a Currant Bun acetate. EMI still objected to the "I'm high" lyrics anyway. So the band had to go back to Sound Techniques and rerecord it.

06 Interstellar Overdrive

Recorded live at UFO on 27 January 1967 by Granada TV (not 20 January has erroneously reported in some sources). This version is cut as per the editing for the program "Underground: Scene Special". Interestingly, this version lacks the narrator commentary that appears in the final broadcast version. First broadcast on 8 March 1967 (not 7 February as erroneously predicted by Melody Maker).

07 Interstellar Overdrive
Taken from the French EP released 11 April 1967. Pink Floyd attempted to create a shorter version of IO especially for France during a recording sessions on 16 March and 22 March 1967. These were abandoned. The French version was edited from the same source used for the LP (recorded 27 February 1967), just a different mix.

08 Flaming
Taken from the US single, released 2 November 1967. The original US release of Piper at the Gates of Dawn did not include the song Flaming. It was released later as a single. This version of Flaming comes from the same recording used for the UK version (16 March 1967) but has a slightly different mix.

09 Pow R Toc H

10 Astronomy Domine

Taken from the BBC's "Look of the Week" television program (14 May 1967).

11 See Emily Play
Taken from acetate #2 of 21 May 1967 recordings made at Sound Techniques. Two acetates are known. They are numbered 1 and 2 based on the order in which they were discovered. This second acetate features a slightly extended ending.

12 Experiment
Much about this recording is unknown, including the title. Traditionally, it's been called Experiment (as we do here) or Sunshine. But that was before anyone learned what Sunshine really was.

13 Sunshine
Sunshine is really the last section of Matilda Mother. Matilda Mother had been rerecorded on 7 June 1967. However, Norman Smith decided that the instrumental section in the middle was too long. During an editing session on 29 June, he literally cut the tape into three pieces. The first part was called "Matilda Mother", the second part (the part being deleted) was called "Wondering and Dreaming", and the third part was called "Sunshine" (based on a convenient lyrical reference at that point). Parts one and three were then spliced together to create the official version. On the stereo release, the "Sunshine" lyric in the left channel gets overpowered by the "For all the time spent in that room" lyric that predominates the right channel. To better hear and appreciate "Sunshine", I've made a mono version of just the left channel starting at the splice point.

14 Scream Thy Last Scream
Recorded at Abbey Road on 7 August 1967. This track is taken from a stereo mix done my Peter Jenner in 1974.

15 Set The Controls

16 Reaction in G

Taken from the BBC's inaugural "Top Gear" Radio 1 program aired on 1 October 1967 (not from a pirate radio rebroadcast). The tracks were recorded at the BBC's Playhouse Theatre on 25 September 1967. The DJs heard on these tracks are Pete Drummond and John Peel. Both DJs were former Radio London DJs (which had shut down on 14 August 1967). Note, the Marine Offenses Act (which took effect 15 August 1967) made these offshore pirate radio stations illegal.

17 Vegetable Man
Recorded at De Lane Lea on 9-11 October 1967. This track is taken from a stereo mix done my Peter Jenner in 1974.

18 Remember a Day
This instrumental version of the song is taken from the DVD of the Syd Barrett spoof film "Remember a Day" starring Darryl Read. Recorded at De Lane Lea on 9-11 October 1967.

19 Apples and Oranges
Recorded at Abbey Road on 26-27 October 1967. This track is the stereo version taken from the Masters of Rock LP.

20 Pow R Toc H
Taken from the BBC's "Top Gear" Radio 1 program aired on 31 December 1967. The track was recorded 20 December 1967 at the BBC's Maida Vale studio. Although this track appears on our BBC Archives 1967-1969 release, it is not the same. The BBC archives version is taken from a rebroadcast of the show and has the ending significantly cut short. This track here on Dawn of the Piper rev A contains the entire song from the recently uncovered original broadcast.

The Harvested team has gone to great pains to bring you the best possible quality sound for each of these twenty tracks. Many times, fresh transfers were taken from the original source tapes and discs.
