Comments:
Courtesy of Tapeboy and the JEMS team, here is the final installment in JEMS' series of outstanding master recordings from The Who's fall 1979 American tour. This one represents the second of two non-consecutive dates The Who performed near Washington, D.C.; a substitute for the canceled Providence show. As usual, J pulled another fine recording what I assume was a less-than-acoustically-perfect arena ... for a late 1970s recording, this again features outstanding dynamics, and virtually no close-mic crowd noise.

The performance itself is a fairly typical setlist, about five minutes shorter than the first Landover show. The one setlist standout is the inclusion of an incendiary version of "Magic Bus" as the final encore - the only time they played it in this slot on the tour. Unfortunately, the medley at the end is considerably shortened, and "How Can You Do It Alone" is dropped as a result.

This is an incomplete show, the quality is about a 3+/4 out of 6.
The performance is first rate, the entire band seems on and EC's solos are sharp and right on the money!!!

Notes by the taper:
A great recording made leaning against the barrier at the back of the very front pit. I had a circle of about 5 foot of space around me so there's very little audience noise on this one. The first few songs were a bit bass-heavy over the PA but this soon clears up after the first few songs and the sound quality drastically improves. It sounds great on my Hi-Fi at home so I haven't added any eq. or processing.

Comments
Some really funny bits with Keith Moon, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend here. All alternate versions of songs, studio outtakes and one Live uknown source. This is a classic Who bootleg.

"Upgrades From The Boxed Set". This is actually a pretty neat CD. Keith Moon continues his madcap spoofs we got a taste of on the "30 Years Maximum R&B" box set. These are, with the exception of Tommy's Holiday Camp, all studio cuts and include some humorous band banter between the cuts. "Melancholia" is The Who's version different from Pete Townsend's Scoop version. Tommy's Holiday Camp is live from an unknown source but appears to be from TKAA/Kilburn era judging from the sound. I Am The Sea & The Real Me is a Who version I have never heard before. It is a bit slower and the brass in the background is more prominent than on any known demo version. Pete's guitar parts are also played differently than on any known versions. One Life's Enough is a Roger Daltrey "crooner" that could have well, fit well with either of his solo LP's Daltrey or One Of The Boys. Overall a great bootlege cd for any Who fan.

Notes by the uploader

I already uploaded a version of this recording here at Dime on 2010-08-05. I got it from Sabbatology. It had amazing sound, but turned out to have some bad-sounding digital errors (e.g. in track 9 of disc 1 "Guitar Solo" at about 6:50 min of that song). Another version that I listened to didn't have those errors, but sounded MUCH worse - probably it was from a different source. (As far as I know, 3 (!) video sources of this show exist. I don't know however whether all available audio versions are sourced from video, or whether there is also an audio source.)

Anyway, for almost two years after my first upload, I have looked for a version that sounds as stunning as the one that I uploaded in 2010, but doesn't have those annoying defects. To make a long story slightly shorter: finally I asked axefiend, a member of the Deep Purple Hub, and he helped me immediately! He had exactly what I was looking for, and here it is for all of you! PLEASE ADDRESS YOUR THANKS TO HIM!

Running time, track-splitting and sound are exactly the same as in my 2010 upload, but this one doesn't have those annoying errors! (Or at least it doesn't have the abovementioned error in track 9 - please tell me if you find any defects in this upload.)

About the lineage I can only say that axefiend got it on 2 CDs in a trade years ago, and that it is an audience recording with a GREAT sound: EX or even EX+, which is quite exceptional, because usually I don't give and EX+ rating to an AUD recording. Check the samples. And they played "TV Crimes"!

The audience noise fades out and in between track 10 and 11, so this fits the "Children of the Machine" artwork better than the "Save the Elf" artwork.

Quote from Sabbathlive.com (RIP):
"Mid-way through the first verses of "Iron Man", Ronnie forgets the words! The band waits for him to get it together and he manages to regain his footing."

Notes:
I was not going to go to this show because I knew I would only get 2 albums out of the three. But a buddy of mine had comped tickets so I couldn't pass up a freebie. This was recorded from the floor about 25 feet from the stage in the center. Because this was a casino the setlist was abbreviated, but it was a really good show. Tempos, for the most part, were back to normal. Like previous complaints about the last couple tours Geoff Downes keys were inaudible at times although the recording seems to do a better job than the ears. Steve Howe was the best of the night. At one point during Perpetual Change Steve, Chris and Alan were not together timing-wise, but after about 30 seconds they got it together. Jon Davison did not disappoint.

Patti is most annoyed at having had to agree in advance to refrain from using certain language during the live broadcast... but she deals with it in her own way. Stage intros and Patti's commentaries are not cut into separate tracks. If there are any censored versions of this circulating, they must be destroyed.
