13. All The Young Dudes
14. Lounge Lizard

Notes:
First date of the Fall European tour with Mick Ronson in the group. This recording was transferred from audio cassette to CD-R. The audio cassette was received in a trade several years ago and ran a little fast (which is how everyone I know had it). For the transfer to CD-R, the pitch was adjusted so that it sounded the right speed to my ears.

There were some changes to the setlist from the U.S. tour in the spring with Ariel Bender. "Hymn For The Dudes", "Marionette", and "Walkin' With A Mountain" were replaced by Ronson's Angel #9" and 2 new numbers, "Saturday Gigs" and "Lounge Lizard". Unfortunately, "Saturday Gigs" is cut short and "Angel #9" is missing the first few seconds, as well as, any banter in between the 2 tracks. This is also where the tape flip occurs.

Iggy and The Stooges - 1974-01-19 - Toledo, OH (AUD/ FLAC) by REQUEST

(Audience FLAC)

The Toledo Sports Arena

This was recorded on a General Electric cassette recorder on an RCA CV 60 cassette. This torrent was made from that master cassette... or what remains of it. Sometime in the late 1970s, I dubbed the cassette onto a reel to reel and reused the cassette around that time. After a few years of not listening to the reel tape (probably around 1980), due to its poor quality, I cut The Stooges portion from the reel and (probably) used it for other things. The only thing from this recording that survives is most of "Search and Destroy" from the end of the master cassette. Thankfully, this was never recorded over.

For years, I've scoured over all my old reels in search of the rest of the concert. I've even tried misaligning the tape across the head to see if any remnant remains off track (I've discovered this can happen). Sadly, nothing seems to remain. I am positive I still have the cut out tape but it is likely recorded over. If I EVER discover any more of it, I'll certainly get it out there.

This one song recording has circulated since the 1980s from a single trade I made with a friend back then and most copies out there are multi-generation from his source. A few years ago, probably 2008, I made a fresh digital dub from the master cassette. I did post it on The Stooges Forum so, it's already out there. I figured I would propagate it a bit more with a torrent. If you've seen this date on Stooges lists, this is the tape referred to.

DIGITAL TRANSFER:

Probably 2008
Playback machine: Nakamichi CR-7A
Straight to computer with Sound Blaster card
Software: Steinberg Wavelab 4.0

I don't remember exactly but, considering the sound of the source tape, I surely did some volume and transient peak adjustments and surely applied some EQ. I don't recall using any noise reduction but it's a good possibility. Likewise, I might have applied some other minimal processing.

Note too, memory has served me that a complaint we had about this show was that Iggy's voice was difficult to hear which is evident in this recording. Even though the quality is so poor, I've so grown to regret not saving the complete recording.

ARTWORK (see further details below):

- contemporary shots inside (showing where I was seated) and outside of the arena (now demolished)
- the master cassette sides A & B
- show poster
- show ad from the Toledo Blade newspapaer
- the reel tape with enhancement to illustrate original setlist from the show

01 - Search and Destroy (incomplete)

TIME: 4:05

Artwork details about the tape and box:

The cassette condition is as it was since the early 1980s. And, to further details about this concert, I've illustrated the reel to reel box which features a setlist of sorts. Part of the list was written when I dubbed the cassette onto the reel. Because "Rich Bitch" is listed, it was obviously after "Metallic KO" was released. I also recall "Head On" being one of the unknown tracks 5-7.

As listed on the reel box:

1. Raw Power
2. Rich Bitch
3. Heavy Liquid
4. Gimme Danger
5. unknown
6. unknown
7. unknown
8. Search and Destroy (listed at the top right of the box)

Track descriptions:
01 Contains a different Springsteen vocal overdub and a very long, extended jam ending.
02 This track has the original Van Zandt background vocals.
03 Slighly different version / mix.
04 Unedited, contains an entire extra verse (about Bruce’s dad) that was cut from the officially released version.
05 One of his finest studio performances. For some bizarre reason Springsteen & The E Street Band re-recorded the
song in 1995 and released that re-recording on 'Greatest Hits' – but it pales in comparison to this original.
06 Different mix than on the one released on 'Tracks'.
07 Bruce borrowed the first two lines from Chuck Berry’s song “Bye Bye Johnny” (as well as the play on the title),
which is why it’s registered as a Springsteen-Berry composition.
08 Originally recorded for "Darkness", and recorded again here, this was considered for the 'Greatest Hits' collection but was finally dropped.
09 Full, unedited version that includes lyric changes and the complete raucous ending. This track runs nearly a full 1:30 longer than the released version.
10 Slighly different version / mix.
11 A bit longer version.
12 Beautiful keyboards by Danny and Roy augment some fine acoustic guitar playing by Bruce.
13 Presented in best-ever quality, this unreleased gem far eclipses any current circulated versions.
14 Unreleased studio outtake.
15 Wonderful tune with a killer chorus - note the bass line similar to the Human Touch B-side '30 Days Out'
16 Short but energetic rocker.

* 'Thrill Hill West' is Springsteen’s home studio in Los Angeles (aka 'Hollywood Hills Garage Studio').
* Most band tracks are E Street Band backing versions from so-called “electric Nebraska session”

- Track 12 from 'Lost Masters XVIII', LOVE 018
- Tracks 15,11,13 from 'Lost Masters XVI', LOVE 016
- Track 8 from 'Lost Masters IV', LOVE 004

Track descriptions:
01 The original mix without the new (90's) vocal track or the overdubbed second guitar on 'The Essential BS'. One of my favourite tracks, too bad the sound quality is what it is.
02 Different mix permutation of the same core recording as #1.
03 Completely different recording than the released 'Cover Me' done in a dramatically different arrangement.
This may actually date from a later period in the sessions than the original 'Cover Me'.
04 Same core recording as on 'Tracks', but has a much longer fade out (very nice) and features Steve Van Zandt on background vocals and guitar.
05 Different mix permutation of the same core recording as #1.
06 Different mix than on the one released on 'Tracks'.
07 Includes slightly different lyrics and an alternate beginning and ending.
08 This song was given to Donna Summer, who was recording an album at the time at the same studio.
Summer’s cover version (with Springsteen on guitar) was recorded in March 1982 (released Aug 82).
Bruce and Donna also recorded a duet vocal version at her sessions – it remains uncirculating.
09 Original mix with the saxophone track (deleted on 'Tracks').
10 Features Ruth Jackson on background vocals. Possibly recorded at the same session as 'My Hometown' (which also features Jackson).
11 By far the definitive version of this song – contains an additional, important lyric verse that has been cut from all the other versions.
12 Brilliant song that developed from a 1981-82 work-in-progress composition called 'James Lincoln Dear'
13 Unreleased studio outtake.
14 Unreleased studio outtake.
15 Compelling song. Features a dark, brooding beat that mirrors the disturbing nature of the lyrics. A nice vocal performance here and we're left wondering what possessed him to write this one.
16 Add this to the ever expanding list of Bruce's greatest unreleased songs. A man surveys his life and wonders if he can ever escape the demons of his past.

* 'Thrill Hill West' is Springsteen’s home studio in Los Angeles (aka 'Hollywood Hills Garage Studio').
* Most band tracks are E Street Band backing versions from so-called “electric Nebraska session”

Here's a Blondie show from New Year's Eve 1979 a few have requested lately. I'd shared it 5 years ago but a lot has changed (mainly the links and services) since then.

I first really "heard" Blondie in 1980. I'd likely heard her on the radio prior to that, but I found an 8-track tape of her in 1980 and fell in love with her voice. I wasn't allowed to listen to rock 'n' roll as a kid so I missed out (back then) on a lot of great artists and had to sneak around to finally start listening to the music I loved. My dad actually found my first Blondie cassette tape and smashed it against a brick wall. When he came across the Blondie 8-track tape, he used a Roberts R7 (I think that's the model...been to long ago) reel-to-reel recorder with and 8-track port to record over it. Today, I own that Roberts reel-to-reel recorder and things area lot different. I think this is half the reason I love music, and especially the late 1960's - early 1980's music, so much. The other half is that it was just excellent music!

The last song. "Sunday Girl", is only 3 minutes, 6 seconds long and the credits start rolling right before the song fades out and the program ends. I could've used the standard DVD burner's menu, but instead I decided to just make this a put in and play DVD with no menu. If I ever build another DVD project out of this I'll add a menu.

There was some confusion the first time I uploaded this DVD as to whether or no it was from the officially released 1979 Apollo Theatre DVD. It isn't. That show was from March of 1979, and while I don't have it, the TV program noted that this show was on December 31st, 1979 before it began airing.

I think Blondie and her whole band were at their prime in this time period. Her voice is flawless and the music, while still having some disco types of sound (I never liked disco and never will) in some songs, was much more rock 'n' roll sounding with guitar, keyboards, drums, and the likes.

A few words about the quality. This is a little hissy but the sound is great for such an early recording. You will NOT be disapppointed in this one.

Not sure of the exact location of Stonehenge. But, I believe it was not actually in Boston proper. Does anybody know exactly where this club was located?

This came to me undated, but there are a few clues which help narrow down possibilities. First, John Felice is not on this. That means that the concert occurred between summer 1971 and the beginning of September, 1972. Or, after March, 1973.

Jonathan announces that "Fly Into the Mystery" was written almost three years before the concert. It was certainly written before he moved to NYC in the summer of 1969, and probably dates from 1968, which means that the most likely date for this is Fall 1971. But, early 1972 is also a possiblity. Finally, "A Plea for Tenderness" was a later song. I've always associated it with 1972, but it certainly is possible that it was written in 1971.

======================================

First of all, this was originally going to be a 2cd set of 'Darkness' studio outtakes. As I kept editing these songs, there was no way they could've fit on only 2cd's. (Plan was, 1cd 'Original Darkness Mixes', other cd of various outtakes). Then next thing I noticed, I had planned a 6cd set with 2cd's of Live tracks ... In the end I decided not to include the live cd's which made this 'only' a 67 track, 4cd collection. I used John's 'brucebase' website (link somewhere below) as a database to see which tracks were 'worth' editing, where I could find them and so on.

Making this a 4cd set allowed me to include some of the tracks I would've otherwise left out, such as the alternative 'Dont Look Back' & 'Ramrod' which are both in a bit worse sound quality. I wouldn't say any of the tracks sound 'bad'.

When burning this compilation, make sure you burn it DAO - without the 2 seconds gaps between each track.

My favourite tracks: D3Track01 & D3Track16.

Big thanks to FrankiesJoint & Jumpstone for finding me most of the tracks.

This show is awesome in sound and performance. There are a few split second dropouts in the audio, but not many. I believe there are 3 or 4 of them but they do not ruin the recording. The taper quit recording as the band left the stage after "Wheel In The Sky". He didn't record the audience cheering and missed about a second or two of the encore where Neal Schon's solo begins. Whoever recorded the show did an excellent job, and as always, the Japanese crowds were polite and quiet during the music and showed their enjoyment of the music between songs.

The CD-R's I got in trade long ago were not tracked at the beginning of many of the songs. I'm just quessing here; but I imagine the recorder may have been marking new tracks live as the songs changed. I don't recall if tape recorders in 1982 had that capability but I imagine DAT recorders may have. That's why I took both CD's, removed all track markers, and created new song tracks. Nobody wants to jump to a song and it began at the end of the previous track :-)

The trader I got this show from added bonus tracks and there were two songs, "The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love)" and "Where Were You" that were from another show. They were uncut and in this order and I have no idea what show they came from (yet). He also had added some tracks from the 1986 Raised on Radio TV Special as filler songs I guess. I left all of these out since they were not part of the Osaka show

OEB comment:
Very good audience recording of

Great versions and there are a couple of very rare songs in this setlist:
-Portobello belle,
-Solid rock (really rare for 1979!),
-Setting me up (rarely performed live)
-Twisting by the pool.

Also a very nice bridge between Angel of mercy and Solid rock. Very cool version of Southbound again. The atmosphere is terrific on this concert, a must to have!
