DAT D2 Master Soundboard, recorded by traink
16bit, 48 kHz transfer by reelclasio: DAT Cassette > Pioneer D-05 > Hucht > Tascam SS-R1 Compact Flash Card
> PC > Samplitude 11 for Track splitting

Fourth installment of a new batch of Townes recordings (6) fellow dimer traink gave me. He recorded Townes a couple of times in Germany in the ninetees. A few of these recorings are his own masters, a few are traded copies on DAT.

This project is a true team effort: traink provided the tapes and handed them over a few weeks ago at In The Woods. Not only did he give me these Townes tapes, he also included Eric Taylor and Chris Smither. I brought the tapes to reelclasio, who still has working DAT recorders. Moreover he's one of the better tapers of the Netherlands. He did a 16/48 transfer and sent me the raw files and a quickly edited version. Fredtaper did the final editing. I coordinated the project, split a few files that had more than one song, adapted the setlist, made covers and downsampled to 44.1kHz for burning to CD.

The recordings I'll share are either new into circulation or fresh transfers of shows that are circulating, making them an upgrade.

The show shared now is not new into ciculation, but while the previously shared version are traded Cd's, this is a fresh transfer from the master tape. Great sounding show. Townes thanks Luke for the great sound in the venue. The previous version starts with Loretta, which is not included here, so either it comes from another source or it was a patch.

About the location: the other version mentions the venue as Alter Schlachthaus, which is not correct.
Alter Schlachthaus is in Halle, Schweinehalle is in Hanau (near Frankfurt. Townes mentions being back in Frankfurt). I can understand the mix up. For our non-German speaking members both names indicate slaughterhouses: Old Slaughterhaus en Pig's hall. As a devouted vegetarian both names sound horrible to me.

Comments:
VGP released a 4-CD set with two completely mixes of the same show -- from Yokohama, Japan March 12, 2003. The first two discs consisted only of a remastered recording of Mick's IEM feed; anyone who is familiar with IEM knows that these are frequently a very "imperfect" mix, to say the least. Discs 3 and 4 were a matrix of a good audience recording and the arena's ALD feed (who knew they had ALD in Japan????), a version which (in my opinion) was dramatically better. This torrent consists of ONLY discs 3 & 4 from the set -- to be honest, I didn't even keep the IEM (which means I can't torrent it, unfortunately).

Sound quality is great, particularly during the quiet parts. It's evident that the raw ALD recording is pretty good and relatively free of dropouts (or if there are any, they were covered up nicely during the editing process). There aren't really any big surprises in the setlist, but it's always nice to hear less-frequently played tracks like "Loving Cup" and "Mannish Boy." This is a good one to pick up if you're a Stones fan but not necessarily a completist; hardcore fans probably already have this (or if they don't, I imagine they will be posting requests for discs 1 & 2 in the comments).

Track 1 through 9 are demo and alternate tracks from "Big Generator". Rumor has it that these are the Trevor Horn produced songs, who left the project before it was completed.

Track 10,11,12 and 13 are Jon & Vangelis demos, and stated on the cover art to be recorded in 1986. Research suggests that they were recorded somewhere between the "Private Collection" album (1983) and "Page Of Live" (1991).

15 Take Care Of Me

This recording begins with the near final strains of The 1812 Overture, and Iggy shouting "Hey you f***ing c**ts kiss my butt!"

Then the band launch into Hassles...as it's immediately noticeable this recording is even  clearer than the Hammersmith (Feb 80), Hamburg (May 80) and the Pesaro (May 80) FM recording: the clarity, stereo sound and comparitively low audience noise  suggest it's a mixing desk recording.

The sound is not dissimilar to the (admittedly audience) Stadio Comunale, Torino, Italy, 19th June 1981 recording. Like the recent Sydney Capitol Theatre July 1983 FM recording, the vocal is sometimes a bit off centre, but since this the band seem about right in the stereo 'picture', I have not tried to correct that.

The recording signal fades a bit here and there on some of the tracks, I did some repairs of the worst bits of that in Audacity, raising the levels in the worst bits of dropout /fading out.

Nice to finally get a high quality stereo recording of I'm Crying...the only disappointment is that versions liked this missed the boat and got overlooked in all the previous live releases and compilations. Some tracks have faltering recording signal more than others - like Five Foot One and Take Care Of Me...so if you like to download one track to judge quality, I'd say try at the very least try something other than Five Foot One, where the signal was weakest. With Take Care of Me, signal fluctuations and noise meant I reduced the treble filter some of the worst of that - honestly, it made uncomfortable listening until I did that. Overall though, this is a fine quality recording.

So, after finding a few winter - spring 1980 recordings (which do actually all stand up on their own merits still), I have now finally found the best quality one it seems.

notes:
This earliest Canned Heat live tape I found yet, was recorded in an unknown club and feature the original Canned Heat w/Frank Cook on Drums! Again the song-list here includes some tracks not available from any other known Canned Heat recording! Those of you who
downloaded in June my Canned Heat compilation "Tracks" already have nearly half of the tracks here, but these tracks were remastered in a different way from my own tape & here's the complete performance, from a different source!

CANNED HEAT's Club performance here is kind of rough and unpolished, but full of "Heat" and some tracks here are standing clearly in the tradition of the great "Blues Shouters" as Howlin Wolf or Big Joe Turner! The general quality is great, but on some tracks the Bear's vocals are quite oversaturated! I did my best to polish this & also used the better channel (with less dropouts) of this mono sbd recording!
