Unknow Capture of Radio - CDR Trade - Extrated and Converted to Flac with Sound Forge 10 - Flac Level 8

This CD I got from a Japanese collector in distant years when trades were made by post before the fast internet connections, especially here in Brazil. I like the Both Sides tour. It was not so spectacular as the previous 1990 but still consisted of a very good repertoire. This show in particular is one of the best performances of the tour. As is known, this time the voice of Phil Collins suffered problems with sufferable performances as in Chile in 18-Apr-1995 where have the impression that your voice will end up before the show. The quality of the audio, to be as their origin a FM radio broadcast, I regard as excellent, almost at the level of an SBD. Hope you enjoy the result.

* Thanks to Genesis Movement site where I got the cover art and some additional information.

Notes
Nice soundboard from PG´s album number 3. Unlike many other artists, Gabriel´s soundboard and radio broadcasts are extremely rare so if you don´t have this one, you will enjoy it. This is still the early stage of the tour so the band is a bit unrehearsed. I remember owning a copy of this back in the mid 80´s which was very hissy. This copy from RLR collection sounds much better in my ears. This is the complete except for Moribund which has one section cut because of the tape flip. But the rest is there, including Peter´s attempt to make the audience singing during Games Without Frontiers...

Comments:

There is already a nice audience recording in circulation, but as this is FM quality, is demonstrably better. Fidelity is fairly typical (compressed) for a local FM broadcast; I believe it was aired live on a local radio station the night of the show. This doesn't have the sound quality of, say, a WWI or WXRT broadcast, but it's extremely enjoyable nonetheless -- and probably the best recording in wide circulation from the tour. With the exception of a CD switch (the seeder recorded this live directly on a stand-alone CDR), this represents the complete performance.

Default PCR DVD Pink Floyd-Blurry Visions
This is a title that I am especially happy to be able to share with you nice folks. It's been a long, long time in coming. It all started when I received a Floyd VoIO that contained some bonus materials. These materials, I thought, were extremely poorly done. I wished at the time that I could fix it up a bit... But, sadly, I did not have any of the original source materials - so I couldn't do a better job no matter how much I wanted to.

Off I went in pursuit of the necessary source materials. As I skipped down the Yellow Brick Road, I came across many wild and hairy creatures, indeed. Among those kindly souls was Andrew Webber - a very nice guy who has been helping me weed VoIOs since this group began. Although I saw no lions or tigers, I did stumble across bear - the moderator of a certain 15 year old Floyd discussion group. I was given nourishment and provisions by our host, Steve Bennett. And, the way to the Emerald City was illuminated by our dear friend Simon.

Thus fortified, accompanied, and directed, I was able to obtain the necessary source materials and forge them into a medium that everyone can easily enjoy.

What I am speaking of, specifically, is a number of films that are available online for "immediate viewing" - that is you can view them but can't download them, capture them, or manipulate them. Some of the host sites still exist - some have gone away. These films are what I would generally call "promo" films - music videos, films made to promote a particular album's release, and so forth. Typically, these films have not been shown on MTV or VH1 or anything similar. In other words, the internet versions are all there are. When these sites go away - and some already have - the films will simply not be available. The films, on the sites that are still around, can only be viewed in miniature on a small computer screen by those folks who don't have a dial-up connection.

This just did not seem, to me, to be a good thing. Even having the source files on a CDR does not solve the problem for those who fans who are not terribly computer literate. (Try explaining how to run a Flash film offline to someone who barely knows what the big blue "e" on their desktop is!)

What was obviously needed was to convert the films - properly - to DVD. This way anyone can view them offline at anytime on a nice large screen.

Because the films all originate from an internet source of one kind or another , they suffer from data compression. That's just the way the original files are, folks. There's nothing that can be done about it. This gives the films a slightly blurry feel. You'll know it when you see it. It also gives the disk it's title - Blurry Visions. The important thing was to avoid making the films any *more* blurry than they already were!!

Although the pickier folks out there might point out that one or two of the films were, indeed, shown on MTV (such as the Learning To Fly video), I would argue in return that I rather like this version. Plus, I had a few minutes of room left on the disk - and after all - why not include it ?

The vast bulk of these films have never been seen offline anywhere before. I'm more proud of this collection than any of my prior work. I have watched this disk over and over - more than any of my other disks by far.

Here is another very nice compilation of vintage performances. Got this on HungerCity long time ago, thanks Kindly note this was publicly broadcasted in the US back then, so there is absolutely no nudity in this show. This was an hour-long show that ran on network TV (!)from July 1968 to May 1970. The ever hip and debonair Hef surrounded himself with a bunch of attractive young pseudo-sophisticates, salted each week with a variety of personalities ranging from Milton Berle to Mort Sahl, Sid Caesar to Lenny Bruce, Roman Polanski (and Sharon Tate) to Paul Mazursky. There was also some amazing music.

Here's a description of the show by Chris Rywalt:
"The camera moved lazily across a room where a party was going on. A party unlike any party I had ever seen, on film or otherwise. People chatted in small groups. Everyone had a drink in their hand. Blacks and whites mingled freely. Almost everyone was smoking. Quiet jazz filled the room. Everyone was dressed stylishly and with care. Everyone looked attractive in a comfortable way. No one looked like a model -- the guests all just looked like handsome, pleasant people. The light was soft, yellowish, and diffuse.

"The camera wandered past the guests, stopping here and there and catching fragments of their conversation. The camera rolled along very slowly. Amazingly slowly. [snip]

"Later in the show, the camera panned along and encountered a band. They were playing jazz. Gradually, as the camera didn't move, it became apparent that this was a featured band, performing for the show.

"And all of After Dark was like this. Long, languorous camera shots, lingering on details, while an incredibly civilized party went on, with everyone drinking and smoking and grooving to the music. And occasionally one of the guests would turn out to be someone with a talent, who would graciously agree to share some of it with us."

This is a really well recorded, well balanced tape. Taken from the soundboard, it's a very enjoyable lively show with the band firing on all engines. The mix is superb, although the bass is a little hard to distinguish - otherwise, there's no problems with this at all.

Please note that these files are actually an improvement over the contents of the bootleg CD: I've cleaned up the intro to 'Truth' (track 4), so that it runs entirely smooth now.

This Japanese bootleg CD was released late last year, making shameless use of recordings that had previously been seeded on this very site - not to mention the parasitic use of photos pilfered from Philip Carly's site for the artwork. Here's two fingers in your face, thieves!

Release Notes:
Around the JEMS offices, they are collectively referred to as the Big Five. I'm talking of course about the five live radio broadcasts from the Darkness tour. Since the start of the bootleg CD era, the Big Five have been released multiple times and the torrent era is no different. Until 2011, the weak sister in the bunch (apologies, girls) was clearly Atlanta, but JEMS' pre-FM upgrade changed that in a big way, as most of the show is now as good if not better than the best '78 FMs.

Now the distinction of weakest falls to The Roxy, July 7, 1978. Whereas there are pre-FM sources for Cleveland, Winterland and the aforementioned Atlanta, Passaic and the Roxy exist only from off-air recordings, and, for whatever reason, 9/19/78 has always sounded better than 7/7/78. When we sourced the new version of Atlanta, the same cache of tapes included cassettes and studio reels of The Roxy that we thought might prove to be pre-FMs but, alas, they too were off air. Still, we thought they could be an upgrade to the best extant version of the show, which, depending on your tastes, is either Ev2's No Private Party or Crystal Cat's Roxy Night.

Our project was well underway when we remembered an old set of reels we had obtained from a friend who was getting rid of his collection almost 20 years ago. Those reels include a note to our friend from the person who recorded the show off-air dated July 17, 1978, less than two weeks after the broadcast, so this is a first generation copy made at the time. The good news is this copy was recorded at 7-1/2 IPS (inches per second) from a master recorded at the same speed. Why is this important? Well, compared to a standard cassette which runs at 1-7/8 IPS and is an 1/8 of an inch wide, a 1/4-inch reel running at 7-1/2 has 8x as much tape surface to capture the recording. More tape, more accurate recording.

So, unlike most Roxy '78 releases and torrents, this is a fresh transfer of a new, uncirculated, source tape, not a remaster of extant sources. It has also been speed corrected (Roxy Night has pitch issues). We would characterize it as a modest but material upgrade, but you should make your own choice. It's not a leap like Atlanta, but if you like a more natural sound, this might prove pleasing. Samples provided.

Thanks to our old friend P for the reels all those years ago. Thanks also to Flynn, who has made this show his mission to improve. We continue to value his contributions to getting JEMS titles out there.

Eric Clapton
Madison Square Garden
New York, NY
March 20, 2017

Night Two

This was the second night of a brief tour, with few changes from night one. The set was short, virtually no pauses between songs, same setlist as night one, but different sequence. With no second guitar player, Clapton played lead, rhythm and handled all the vocals. Not bad for a man of his age.

Overall I would say the show was satisfying, but far from his best. I do not expect EC to be touring too much longer, and wanted to have one last chance to see him live.

The sound in MSG was surprisingly good, at least where I was sitting. The patch cord from the preamp to my recorder was bad and caused a number of short drop-outs in the left channel, which I patched from the right. I apologize if I missed any. Overall I think the recording is quite good and would have been better without the usual chatter from my neighbors. Sample is attached.
